The British born, whiskey-swilling, cigar smoking, pistol packing "Poker Alice" was truly some of the preeminent female gamblers of the yank West, a much-storied original character, and most of all - one tough bird. During her years as a gambler she saw all of it; she was dealing faro in Charley Ford's dance hall in Creede when he was cut in half with a double-barrel shotgun; she was working the poker tables in Oklahoma in the course of the great land rush of 1889; and he or she was there when most legal gambling ended on the close of the frontier.
