This year's World Series of Poker has less of a carnival atmosphere than previous years. Less fanfare, fewer sponsors hanging around, almost no online poker sites hawking their games and poker-pro front men, I mean it's really only a tournament now! Sure, the world's largest, with over $222 million in payouts last year, but it surely sure has changed.

The high came in 2006 when there have been 8773 entries for the $10,000 buy-in Texas Hold'em main event, lots of whom were playing because that they had won online tournaments that provided their entry fee. On the time, the Rio had an entire convention wing used full of booths from poker sites, chip manufacturers, software makers, poker magazines, book sellers, even supplement and effort drink makers. It was fun. That's changed with the dwindling of online sites and the dearth folks involvement. I WILL NOT believe I'm saying this, but I REALLY miss all of the peripheral stuff happening. I mean, what number of kiosks owned by Caesars Entertainment and selling hoodies, shirts, mugs, and each other possible logo item for the WSOP should I be subjected too? It was a log more fun with all of the autograph sessions, magazine and book giveaways, and the free SWAG from the poker sites.

The overall numbers for the WSOP are still excellent. Caesar's is creating a virtual killing with their ownership of the WSOP name and tournaments are still very talked-about all around the country in addition to many foreign sites. I do wonder, though, why no person has managed to place together an international Series of Blackjack, or even a really perfect Bowl of Blackjack. Even in small towns with gambling there are blackjack events, and players with advanced skills for winning blackjack tournaments may be able to make the overall table frequently. With that during mind wouldn't you think that some marketer would have cornered the tournament market by now, or is watching people play 21 too boring for TV? Could a big-time blackjack event prosper without TV exposure? Time will tell.
