Today marks the primary regular Hold'em Tournament of the 2013 WSOP. This year's event has a complete of 62 bracelet tournaments, which started Wednesday May 29 with the $500 buy-in Casino Employee round and continued Thursday with a $5,000 8-handed four-day tournament. A number of the tournaments were one-day affairs until online poker sites started sending thousands of players to Las Vegas from satellite tournaments in 2002, which made the fields larger, which made the events two days. Now most are three-day tournaments.
The Casino Employee tournament was won by Chad Holloway, the senior news editor for PokerNews.com. If you're wondering how Mr. Holloway was eligible for the development (casino employees), PokerNews.com does live reporting for the WSOP, contracted by Caesars Entertainment, and thus eligible to play. Holloway beat 897 other players to win $84,915 and his first WSOP bracelet. Strangely enough, I worked for PokerNews.com and not won a bracelet. Bummer!
This year's $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Championship starts July 6 and runs throughout the 15th. That provides you tons of time to drop by the Rio and checkout the action within the convention facilities. This year there are superb rates at many Las Vegas hotels throughout the WSOP. Host of the WSOP, the Rio, has mid-week rooms for only $100, and a few other Caesars Entertainment properties have even lower prices.
At the Flamingo casino, where Las Vegas history and legends and of "Bugsy" Siegel and the Mob all started, mid-week rates are under $50. That's an overly nice bonus this summer in case you are heading to town for just a little poker. Other casino groups like Boyd and Stations even have reduced rates on weekend hotel stays.
