Karas is currently being held without bail on the Clark County Prison in Las Vegas as he awaits extradition, charged with cheating at a California casino by marking cards while playing blackjack.
The Barona casino in California is where the alleged incident took place, with the casino claiming that security footage clearly shows Karas -- whose real name is Anargyros Karabourniotis -- marking cards during sessions that saw him win greater than $8,000.Â
He could resist three years in jail if convicted and it isn't his first scrape with being accused of cheating by a casino; he's been arrested four times previously for similar instances and the Nevada Gaming Control Board has mentioned him as a "threat to the gaming industry" within the past.
Karas has fallen on hard times in recent times but many still remember his amazing run within the early 1990s that saw him turn $50 that he started with in December 1992 into greater than $40 million by early 1995. Dubbed "The Run", he initially won millions playing poker and pool but then switched to high stakes craps, betting $100,000 or more per roll.
His run finally came to an abrupt end, losing all his winnings in only a question of months playing craps and baccarat. Karas would continue to search out success in smaller spin-ups by turning a couple of thousand dollars into $1 million+ bankrolls but he'd continue to donate it back on the high-stakes baccarat and craps tables.
Karas proudly claims that no person in history has gambled more cash in total than he has, a claim that may be impossible to prove but possibly true given the large sums of cash he'd regularly wager for years.Â
