Sister Mary Anne Rapp of Lewiston, Big apple hoped to circumvent jail time after admitting to stealing nearly $130,000 from systematically raiding the coffers of 2 churches over a five year time span.
Rapp took money from collection plates and deposited checks made out to the church into her own personal bank account, with the funds going to fuel visits to numerous casinos in western Ny state, with most of her gambling time spent on the Batvia Downs harness-racing track.
A county judge sentenced her to 90 days in jail, five years’ probation, 100 hours of community service, and $128,000 in restitution payments. “She’s unquestionably done a large number of great things for many people and causes for plenty of years,” Orleans County District Attorney Joseph V. Cardone said. “But you can’t ignore the level of the dishonesty.”
The incontrovertible fact that Rapp systematically stole funds over a five year period didn't work in her favor, with two rural churches in The big apple bearing the brunt of her gambling binges. She faced as much as six months in jail after pleading guilty to grand larceny but a court room apology likely lightened her actual jail time when it came to sentencing, in addition to her pledge to actively work in prison ministery while in jail.
Rapp had already been receiving treatment for gambling addiction during the last nine months, with a goal of not only kicking her gambling addiction but always practicing ultimately repaying all the money that was stolen.
